KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML has nominated 29 new members to its Central Committee.
The party’s Central Committee meeting, which has been underway for four days in Bhanimandal, Lalitpur, decided to nominate the names proposed by party Chair KP Sharma Oli.
Under the UML statute, 10 percent of the Central Committee members can be nominated. The names proposed by Oli at the Secretariat meeting were presented to the Central Committee, which approved 29 of them.
The nominees include leaders who joined the UML from other political parties as well as those already associated with the party. UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet said additional names may also be approved by the Central Committee.
However, Deputy General Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai expressed strong disagreement with Oli’s proposal and the nomination process, recording a note of dissent.
Bhattarai registered his dissent over Oli’s proposal to nominate 10 percent of the Central Committee members. His objections reportedly concerned both the nomination process and the names proposed for nomination.
The four-day Central Committee meeting has been discussing the party’s organizational structure, leadership and future political direction. Oli had proposed the names for nomination during the meeting.
29 nominated Central Committee members
The newly nominated Central Committee members are Kashinath Adhikari, Devraj Ghimire, Bimala Dhimire, Shivamaya Tumbahamphe, Hari Ghimire, Prem Dangal, Pasang Sherpa, Narendra Bhattarai, Shantilal Mahat, Nandalal Devkota, Palten Sherpa, Binod Pandey, Pushpa Shrestha, Januka Simkhada and Kaushala Khati.
Similarly, Mohammad Istiak Rai, Pramod Yadav, Dr Abdul Hussain, Bhawani Khapung, Deepak Saud, Jaya Gole, Babi Chamling, Shriprasad Sharma, Dharma Niraula, Shruvaraj Bista, Arjun Rai, Dharma Giri and G. Gurung have also been nominated as Central Committee members.
The names were approved following discussions on the proposal presented by Chair Oli. The UML Central Committee meeting is scheduled to conclude on Thursday.
