KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Dhananjaya Regmi has urged the government to strengthen preparedness and formulate an effective response plan to protect lives and property from the potential impacts of the monsoon weather system developing in the country.
Speaking during the urgent session of the House of Representatives (HoR) on Thursday, Regmi said merely advising people to avoid unnecessary travel would not be sufficient to protect lives and property given the possibility of heavy rainfall and related disasters.
“Along with asking people to stay at home, they should also be encouraged to assess whether the land around their homes is safe,” he said. He urged residents in hilly areas to watch for new cracks, subsidence or swelling of the ground, unusual water seepage and other early signs of landslides, and to evacuate to safer locations in a timely manner when necessary.
Regmi also called on the government to disseminate information through the media and social media platforms in simple and accessible language about flood warnings and early signs of landslides.
Similarly, RSP lawmaker Gyanendra Singh Mahata called for an immediate review of existing laws and procedures concerning emergency health services and rescue operations to ensure that every citizen has access to treatment during emergencies.
Another RSP lawmaker, Tika Sangraula, called for an immediate investigation into an alleged audio recording involving a customs official from Kanchanpur and the Armed Police Force Superintendent in Kailali. He demanded action against those found responsible, alleging that the official had misused his position and undermined the dignity of the national security and civil service institutions.
