KATHMANDU: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) lawmaker and parliamentary party leader Gyanendra Shahi has said that Nepal’s Constitution should be amended in a way that brings tangible changes and visible improvements to people’s lives.
Sharing his views on social media, Shahi said the Constitution should not remain merely a document on paper and argued that the country needs a system capable of providing employment, quality healthcare and education, good governance and political stability to the people.
Shahi has criticized the existing political system and called for fundamental changes to the Constitution. He argued that a political system influenced by external interests and driven by self-interest cannot deliver the results the country needs.
On constitutional amendment, Shahi has proposed abolishing the provincial structure, establishing Nepal as a Hindu kingdom while recognizing the Vedic-Sanatan civilizational identity encompassing Hindu, Buddhist and Kirat traditions, abolishing the presidency and restoring the monarchy, and introducing a directly elected executive prime minister.
According to Shahi, constitutional amendments based on direct public participation and the people’s views on these issues could create a new foundation for political stability, good governance and a more responsive system of government.
He said that, since the Constitution belongs to the people, decisions concerning the form of the state, the system of governance and the constitutional structure should ultimately be made through popular participation and voting.
Shahi emphasized the need for timely constitutional amendments and for a governance system that reflects the expectations and needs of the people.
