Gen-Z Martyrs’ Day being observed with public holiday today
Nepal is observing Gen-Z Martyrs’ Day today, with a nationwide public holiday declared in memory of the young people who lost their lives during last year’s Gen-Z movement. The Gen-Z movement on August 8 and 9, 2025 triggered major political upheaval in the country. The movement led to the dissolution of the then government and the formation of an interim government under the leadership of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. The government has declared a nationwide public holiday today to commemorate and honor the young people who lost their lives during the movement. A meeting of the Council of Ministers held on 18 Bhadra decided to declare a public holiday across the country on September 8.
Home Minister Gurung: We are here to fulfil the dream of good governance, not to make speeches
Home Minister Sudan Gurung has said the government did not come to power to make grand speeches but to fulfil the people’s hopes and realise the dream of good governance. Addressing a programme organised at the old Parliament building in New Baneshwor to mark Gen-Z Martyrs’ Day, Gurung said the blood shed and sacrifices made by his fellow protesters during the street movement remain fresh in his memory. Expressing his responsibility toward the families of martyrs and those injured in the movement, Gurung urged them to see him not merely as a minister but as their own son, brother or elder brother. He pledged to ensure that citizens’ hopes and trust are not undermined and to carry out his responsibilities with integrity.
Former PM Karki urges leaders to prevent another Gen-Z protest
Former Prime Minister (PM) Sushila Karki has said the Gen-Z movement sent a clear message to the state and political leadership that “without good governance, even a two-thirds majority in Parliament cannot ensure political stability.” Karki made the remarks in a message posted on Facebook on Tuesday, marking the first anniversary of the Gen-Z movement. According to Karki, political stability is determined not by parliamentary arithmetic but by the character and conduct of those in power. She urged the government to work effectively to ensure good governance, control corruption, uphold the rule of law, and respect citizens’ rights. Recalling the loss of life and property during the Gen-Z movement and the pain it caused, Karki called on all political forces and citizens to remain responsible and vigilant to prevent such incidents from happening again.
September 8 and 9 incidents cannot be viewed through the same lens: Minister Gautam
Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam has said the government is fully committed to fulfilling the dreams of the martyrs and those injured during the movement. Speaking at a programme organised in Kathmandu on Tuesday to mark Gen-Z Martyrs’ Day, Gautam said the government had come with good intentions and was fully committed to fulfilling every dream of the martyrs and injured. She said that after the movement, the people chose new leadership through democratic processes and mechanisms, stressing that the government stands with the people. Gautam said the current government has been in place for only around four and a half to five months, and that it has taken time to understand and adjust various state structures.
Bhotekoshi flood: Death toll reaches 1,357
The death toll from the Bhotekoshi flood disaster continues to mount, with authorities reporting the recovery of 1,357 bodies and more than 5,300 people still missing. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 102 of the recovered bodies have been identified and handed over to their families. Around 5,326 people are still reported missing following the disaster. Of those missing, 2,860 are from Rasuwa, 1,981 are Nepali nationals from Nuwakot, and around 587 are foreign tourists, according to the Authority. NDRRMA spokesperson Shanti Mahat said 13,583 people have been rescued so far, while 6,827 people injured in the floods have received treatment. “Of them, 327 were treated at 10 different hospitals, 3,404 by the Nepal Army, and 3,096 by the Armed Police Force,” he said.
Will not deviate an inch from the path of rule of law: Rabi Lamichhane
Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane has said the party is now in a position to answer every question raised by youth from the streets. In a statement issued on Tuesday to mark the first anniversary of the Gen-Z movement, Lamichhane said those in power must remain prepared to answer to the public. “Time has put us in a position to answer every question asked by the youth from the streets last year,” he said. “It has also reminded us that someone may stand up again tomorrow to demand answers from us.” Lamichhane said the Gen-Z movement was not initiated by any particular political party but was a spontaneous awakening of the people, particularly the youth. He warned that no political party or leader should attempt to exploit the movement for narrow political interests.
NIMB Chairman Prithvi Bahadur Pandey released on Rs 4m bail
Prithvi Bahadur Pandey, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nepal Investment Mega Bank (NIMB), has been released on bail of Rs 4 million. Pandey appeared before the Kathmandu District Court on Monday for a bail hearing. A case was filed against Pandey and 22 others on August 10 in connection with the mortgage auction of assets belonging to Smart Telecom. Following the hearing, a bench led by Justice Nawaraj Dulal ordered Pandey’s release on Rs 4 million bail. He was released on Monday after depositing the amount ordered by the court.
NC applauds security bodies for disaster-response efforts
The Nepali Congress (NC) has praised the security agencies for their role and efforts in responding to the recent disasters. A meeting of the party’s Central Works Execution Committee acknowledged the contributions of the security agencies to rescue and relief operations following the devastating flash floods in the Bhotekoshi River and subsequent flooding in the Trishuli River system on August 26. The party also appreciated the assistance, humanitarian support, and solidarity demonstrated by the three tiers of government, political parties, social organizations, and the private sector during the crisis. The meeting held on Tuesday emphasized the need to make rescue, relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts more systematic and effective, according to NC Spokesperson Devraj Chalise.
Nepal Red Cross Society provides food supplies to flood-affected Uttargaya residents
The Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) has been actively providing humanitarian assistance as part of its disaster response since the floods of August 26. Recently, the NRCS distributed essential food supplies to residents of Uttargaya Rural Municipality-2, an area that has remained cut off from the road network since the devastating Bhotekoshi floods. The August 26 floods caused extensive destruction along the Bhotekoshi corridor and settlements along the Trishuli River. The NRCS airlifted humanitarian supplies to the affected area and distributed essential items to 60 households. NRCS Chairman Dr. Bishal Bhandari, along with Red Cross volunteers, handed over the emergency supplies to affected residents. The assistance was supported by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
Several highways remain blocked across Nepal due to landslides
Several highways across the country remain blocked today due to floods and landslides triggered by rainfall. In Rasuwa, flooding in the Bhotekoshi River has disrupted road connections. Several highways in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading, including the Prithvi Highway, have remained closed since Bhadra 10. Likewise, the Mugu-Gamgadhi road in Mugu, the Shahid Highway in Rolpa, the Karnali Highway in Kalikot and Surkhet, and the Rapti Highway in Salyan remain completely blocked today.
