SUNSARI: Twenty-two gates of the Koshi Barrage have been opened as the water level in the Saptakoshi River continues to rise.
According to a water-level measurement taken this morning, 21 gates were open when the flow at the Koshi Barrage reached 184,785 cusecs. Chandra Bahadur Khadka, Information Officer at the District Police Office, Sunsari, said the number of open gates was increased to 22 after the water flow continued to rise, reaching 192,535 cusecs in the evening.
A red warning light is activated toward the west when the water flow at the Koshi Barrage exceeds 150,000 cusecs as a danger signal to alert the public.
Although there is currently no immediate risk of flooding, the water level has been rising since noon. Information Officer Khadka urged concerned agencies and residents living around the Saptakoshi area to remain alert, take necessary precautions and avoid entering risky areas.
The District Police Office, Sunsari, has also urged residents in areas along the riverbank to move to safer locations and refrain from fishing or collecting firewood in the Koshi River.
