KATHMANDU: The death toll from the flash flood in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa on August 26 has reached 553, according to Nepal Police.
The Police Headquarters said 553 bodies had been recovered from various districts as of Thursday night.
According to the headquarters in Naxal, 13 bodies were recovered in Rasuwa, 40 in Dhading, 31 in Tanahun, 38 in Nuwakot, 47 in Gorkha, 222 in Chitwan, 134 in Nawalparasi East and 28 in Nawalparasi West.
Nepal Police spokesperson Deputy Inspector General Abinarayan Kafle said 1,473 people had been rescued from flood-affected areas so far. Of them, 572 were rescued from Rasuwa, 898 from Nuwakot and three from Dhading.
People injured in the flood have been rescued from various locations, with some brought to Kathmandu for treatment. According to police, 97 injured people are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals in Kathmandu, while others have been discharged following treatment.
Employees of the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force Nepal, Customs Office and Immigration Office also lost contact following the flood. Police said 44 Nepal Army personnel, 27 Nepal Police personnel and 13 Armed Police Force Nepal personnel remain missing.
Police said a total of 2,381 people, including civilians, remain missing following the disaster. Search and rescue operations have been intensified in the affected areas.
Security personnel from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force Nepal and other relevant agencies are continuing search and rescue operations in areas considered at risk.
