KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has reiterated that he has no intention of stepping down from the party leadership, challenging those calling for a change in leadership during his visit to his home district of Jhapa.
Speaking at the launch of the “Mission Party Revival Campaign” in Jhapa, Oli expressed dissatisfaction with calls to remove him, saying there is currently no alternative to his leadership.
Oli also criticised what he described as unnecessary publicity surrounding the incident in which Bagmati Province parliamentary party leader Jagannath Thapaliya collapsed at his residence.
He alleged that some party leaders had been campaigning against him by telling party members not to vote for him after he received fewer votes than the number of organised party members.
Responding to calls for him to step aside, Oli said the party is currently in a phase of “revival,” rather than reorganisation.
“We are in a phase of revival, not reorganisation. Reorganisation does not simply mean changing the leadership,” Oli said.
He suggested that there was no alternative to him within the party, claiming that some people who had received little from the party still voted for him, while those who had benefited from it betrayed him by not voting.
Oli also said that the reorganisation of a particular affiliated organisation or committee should not be equated with the reorganisation of the entire party.
He had made similar remarks on Saturday at an event in Ilam, where he said he would not step down from the party leadership.
