BIRATNAGAR: Five ministers from the Nepali Congress, including four ministers and one state minister, have collectively resigned from the Koshi Province government.
The Congress ministers reached the Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers in Biratnagar on Wednesday and submitted their resignations to Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki.
With the resignation led by Minister for Physical Infrastructure Development Pradeep Sunuwar, the Nepali Congress has formally exited the Koshi Province government.
Those resigning are Minister for Physical Infrastructure Development Pradeep Sunuwar, Minister for Tourism, Forest and Environment Bhim Parajuli, Minister for Health Man Bahadur Limbu, Minister for Industry, Agriculture and Cooperatives Israili Mansuri, and State Minister Shobha Chemjong Palungwa.
Speaking to journalists after submitting his resignation, Sunuwar said the Congress had decided to leave the government as the role of the opposition is important in a democracy.
The Congress had earlier withdrawn its support for the Koshi Province government following the three-point agreement between the CPN-UML and the Nepali Communist Party regarding the formation of provincial governments.
However, Congress ministers had continued to remain in the government even after the party withdrew its support.
With the resignation of its ministers on Wednesday, the Congress has now formally withdrawn from the Koshi Province government.
The Congress’ exit is expected to further clarify the political equation and future power-sharing arrangement in Koshi Province.
