Monsoon system to intensify from Saturday night: DHM

KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has said the monsoon system is expected to become more active from Saturday night, increasing the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall across much of the country.

According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division, the ongoing influence of the monsoon is likely to bring widespread rainfall to most parts of Nepal.

Meteorologist Binu Maharjan said moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded over the past 24 hours in many areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.

She said moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to continue until Saturday in many hilly areas, as well as in some parts of the Himalayan and Tarai regions.

Maharjan warned that heavy rainfall, particularly in the hilly districts of Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali provinces, could trigger landslides and increase water levels in rivers and streams.

She urged the public to remain alert, especially those living in landslide-prone areas, and advised travellers to check weather forecasts and road conditions before undertaking long-distance journeys.
