KATHMANDU: An internal survey has found that 87.6 percent of leaders and cadres of the CPN-UML believe party chair KP Sharma Oli should step down, according to the reported findings of the opinion poll.
The survey found that 87.6 percent of respondents favored a change in the party leadership, while 10.5 percent said the current leadership should continue. The remaining respondents did not express an opinion.
The findings also indicated widespread dissatisfaction with the party leadership. About 95.4 percent of respondents said the leadership’s conduct needs improvement, while 94.9 percent said its working style should change.
On the party’s future, 91.4 percent of respondents reportedly said the UML cannot move forward effectively in its current form and needs transformation. Only 7.4 percent believed the party could progress without major changes.
Similarly, 87.5 percent of respondents supported revising the party’s existing policies, while 10.5 percent said the current policies should remain unchanged.
Regarding measures to address the party’s internal challenges, 47.7 percent favored holding a special general convention, while 25 percent supported convening an early general convention. About 24 percent did not express a view.
When asked who should lead the party if the current leadership changes, 50.2 percent preferred selecting a leader from within the central committee, while 16.7 percent favored choosing one from among the party’s office bearers.
The survey also showed broad support for restructuring the party’s organizational framework and introducing a system that would allow all organized party members to vote in the leadership selection process.
The survey has not been officially released or endorsed by the UML leadership, and the party has yet to comment on the reported findings.
