Grenade blast during army training in Kailali kills one soldier, injures another



KATHMANDU: A grenade explosion during a military training exercise in Kailali on Thursday claimed the life of a Nepal Army personnel and injured another officer.

The incident occurred during a live-fire training session in the Jalpa Community Forest area of Mohanyal Rural Municipality-7.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Yogendra Timilsina of the District Police Office, Kailali, the deceased has been identified as Himal Bikram Bista.

Bista died during treatment at Lalmatiya-based Lal Ratna Hospital in Lamki at around 12 noon on Thursday. He had sustained severe injuries from grenade shrapnel to his right palm and multiple parts of his body.

Another officer, Second Lieutenant Himraj Joshi, was also injured in the incident after being hit by shrapnel. His condition is reported to be stable.

Joshi has been airlifted to Kathmandu via a Nepal Army helicopter for further treatment, DSP Timilsina said.

The accident occurred around 9:15 am when a training team from the Sudurpaschim Pritana Training School, Gorange Barracks, was conducting a firing exercise.
