Two arrested for allegedly defrauding victims of Rs 4.5 million with foreign employment promises

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office has arrested two individuals on charges of defrauding job seekers of Rs. 4.5 million by falsely promising employment opportunities in the United States and Croatia.

The arrested individuals have been identified as 45-year-old Ruku Kumari Shrestha of Sailung Rural Municipality-2, Dolakha, and 35-year-old Shailendra Shakya of Urlabari Municipality-6, Morang, according to Superintendent of Police Sharad Kumar Thapa Chhetri of the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office.

SP Thapa Chhetri said the arrests were made following complaints from victims who alleged that the suspects had collected large sums of money with promises of sending them abroad for employment but failed to do so and subsequently went out of contact.

According to the complaints, Shrestha allegedly collected Rs. 3.5 million from victims by promising jobs in the United States, while Shakya is accused of taking Rs. 1 million with assurances of overseas employment in Croatia.

Both suspects were arrested from different locations within the Kathmandu Valley and have been handed over to the Department of Foreign Employment in Tahachal, Kathmandu, for further investigation and legal action.
