CHITWAN: The Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association has once again increased the farm-gate support price of eggs, with the new rates coming into effect from Friday.
The decision was made during a physical and virtual meeting of the association held in Kathmandu. According to Association Chairperson Binod Pokharel, the revised prices were determined based on consultations and recommendations from egg producers and poultry entrepreneurs across the country, with Chitwan serving as the benchmark market.
Under the new pricing structure, XL eggs have been priced at Rs 560 per crate (30 eggs), large eggs at Rs 545, medium eggs at Rs 515, and small eggs at Rs 500 per crate. Following the revision, retail egg prices are expected to reach around Rs 25 per piece.
The association has urged farmers, traders, and other stakeholders to conduct transactions according to the newly fixed rates. Pokharel said the adjustment was necessary due to declining production caused by hot weather and rising production costs.
Egg prices have risen steadily over the past month. On April 24, the farm-gate price of XL eggs stood at Rs 465 per crate, compared to the current Rs 560—a rise of Rs 95, or around 20 percent. During the same period, the price of large eggs increased from Rs 490 to Rs 545 per crate, medium eggs from Rs 400 to Rs 515, and small eggs from Rs 230 to Rs 500.
According to the association, egg prices have improved in recent weeks due to lower production and growing market demand. Pokharel noted that poultry farmers continue to face increasing costs for feed, medicines, and other production inputs, making price adjustments necessary.
He said the current cost of producing eggs is approximately Rs 19.12 per egg. With the implementation of the revised support price, farmers are now receiving returns closer to their production costs.
“After a long period, farmers have started receiving prices that reflect the average cost of production,” Pokharel said.
He added that a rise in tourist arrivals, tighter controls on the import and transportation of eggs in border areas, and increased domestic demand have also contributed to the recent improvement in prices.
Despite the positive trend, Pokharel stressed the need for policy support and government intervention to help reduce production costs and ensure effective market management. He said the current price levels could be sustained if measures are taken to improve market organization and lower production expenses.
