Court orders release of Durga Prasai

BIRGUNJ: The District Court Parsa has ordered the release of Durga Prasai on general bail after his arrest from Birgunj last week.

He was arrested on May 19 from Hotel Siddhartha Diayalo in Birgunj and was in custody at the District Police Office, Parsa.

A single bench of Judge Gayatri Prasad Regmi issued the order on Tuesday, directing that he be released on general bail in a case related to electronic transactions and charges of offences against the state.

According to police, Durga Prasai was taken into custody based on allegations of delivering provocative statements through social media, activities seen as disturbing social harmony, and involvement in actions deemed as incitement against the state.

However, the court concluded that there was insufficient basis to substantiate the claims made by the prosecution.

The Supreme Court had earlier also directed authorities not to keep him in extended detention and instructed that the investigation be completed within the legal timeframe. A habeas corpus petition filed on his behalf was heard by Justices Binod Sharma and Nityanand Pandey, issuing an order against further remand extensions.

Following the completion of the investigation period, police were required to file the case in court, after which the District Court proceeded with its decision to release him on general bail.
