Petition filed at Parliamentary Hearing Committee seeking rejection of CJ nominee Sharma

A written petition has been filed at the Parliamentary Hearing Committee of the Federal Parliament demanding the rejection of the appointment of Chief Justice nominee Dr. Manoj Kumar Sharma. The petition, registered by Jasmine Ojha of Maitidevi, Kathmandu, raises serious concerns over constitutional eligibility, ethics, impartiality and institutional integrity in relation to Sharma’s nomination. The petition outlines multiple objections, including questions over constitutional qualification, alleged influence in judicial appointments, and concerns about impartiality and bias.

UML restores Bidya Devi Bhandari’s party membership after reversing earlier decision

The CPN-UML has reinstated the party membership of former President Bidya Devi Bhandari. A meeting of the party secretariat held at Chairman KP Sharma Oli’s residence in Gundu, Bhaktapur, decided to overturn an earlier Central Committee decision made from July 21 to 23, 2025, and restored Bhandari’s membership. The move comes shortly after the party had decided to halt her membership renewal. Following that decision, Bhandari had been excluded from internal party activities, including the 11th general convention held from December 13 to 17, 2025.

Govt begins refund of deposits to small savers of troubled cooperatives

The government has begun the process of returning deposits to small savers affected by troubled cooperatives. The Problems Cooperatives Management Committee distributed funds to 378 small depositors from three cooperatives on Monday. According to the committee, deposits were returned to 215 savers of Kantipur Cooperative, 156 savers of Shiv Shikhar Multipurpose Cooperative, and seven savers of Pashupati Cooperative. Officials said that on the first day, priority was given to depositors with smaller savings, and refunds will now be gradually distributed based on classification of deposit amounts.

Nepal Medical Council suspends decision to revoke licenses of 36 non-resident doctors

The Nepal Medical Council has suspended its decision to revoke the licenses of 36 non-resident Nepali doctors following widespread criticism. The council had earlier decided in two phases to remove the names of 36 doctors from its registration records. However, after strong opposition to the move, a full meeting of the council held on May 12 decided to retain their names in the registration book for the time being.

Nepali Congress policy institute forms 12 subcommittees for reforms and social issues

The Policy, Research and Training Academy of the Nepali Congress has formed 12 subcommittees to work on policy reforms and key social issues within the party. Academy chief and party vice-president Bishwa Prakash Sharma announced the formation of the subcommittees on Monday. According to the party, the subcommittees have been assigned responsibilities across a wide range of sectors, including land management, disaster response, mental health awareness, digital governance and electoral reforms.

Nepal Bar Association to hold symbolic lantern protest over Supreme Court situation

The Nepal Bar Association has announced a symbolic protest over recent developments and growing tensions at the Supreme Court.  The association has decided to light lanterns in broad daylight on Tuesday as a form of protest, citing concerns over the state of the judiciary. A meeting of the Bar’s central executive committee held on Monday concluded that the situation had deteriorated to the point where even writ petitions could not be registered at the court.

16 complaints filed against proposed Chief Justice Manoj Sharma

Sixteen complaints have been filed against proposed Chief Justice Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma, according to the Federal Parliament Secretariat. A meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee under the federal parliament held on May 9 had provided a 10-day period for submitting complaints against Sharma’s nomination. The Parliament Secretariat said on Monday that 16 complaints were registered during the given period. The hearing process on the complaints is scheduled to begin from Tuesday.

Acting CJ accuses Supreme Court administration of obstructing justice

Acting Chief Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla has ordered the immediate registration of writ petitions related to the proposed chief justice appointment process, expressing serious dissatisfaction over the Supreme Court administration’s refusal to register them. In an order issued at 11 am on Monday, Malla accused the court administration of obstructing the judicial process and described the delay as an obstruction of justice. The order states that writ petitions sought to be filed under Article 133 of the Constitution by senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi, advocate Prem Raj Silwal and others had been intentionally delayed by the Supreme Court administration.

RSP objects in Parliament to acting CJ’s order on petitions against chief justice recommendation

The Rastriya Swatantra Party has objected in the House of Representatives to Acting Chief Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla’s order to register petitions challenging the appointment process of the proposed chief justice. Speaking during Monday’s House meeting under special time, RSP lawmaker Yagya Mani Neupane raised an objection to the move, calling it contrary to established judicial and administrative norms of the court. Nepali Congress lawmaker Arjun Narsingh KC has objected to the government’s failure to make public the National Human Rights Commission’s report on the Gen-Z movement. Speaking during the zero hour of the House of Representatives on Monday, KC questioned why the report prepared under the coordination of Lily Thapa has not been released. “Why and in whose interest has the Human Rights Commission report been withheld?” he asked, demanding that Parliament be informed about the reasons behind the delay.

Acting CJ orders registration of writ petitions related to CJ recommendation dispute

Acting Chief Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla has issued an order to register writ petitions that were filed in accordance with law, according to court sources. On Monday, Malla directed that all related petitions be registered by 1 PM and listed for hearing on Tuesday. The petitions were filed challenging the decision of the Constitutional Council to recommend Manoj Kumar Sharma for the position of Chief Justice.

A 15-member team comprising committee members and officials, led by committee chair Hari Dhakal, visited the holding centre in the morning. Shram Sanskriti Party protests against Prime Minister in House meeting

Lawmakers of the Shram Sanskriti Party staged a protest during Monday’s meeting of the House of Representatives of Nepal, targeting Prime Minister Balendra Shah. As soon as the meeting began, party chair and parliamentary party leader Harka Sampang along with other lawmakers displayed placards inside the House in protest. The placards carried slogans such as “The Prime Minister must be accountable to Parliament,” “Stop running away from questions,” “Respect the public mandate,” “Stop introducing ordinances bypassing Parliament,” and “Maintain parliamentary decorum.”

Foreign Minister Khanal admits incorrect information on Nepali detainee in Iran

Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal has admitted that earlier public information regarding the release of Nepali citizen Amrit Jha was incorrect and has issued an apology over the matter on social media. In a Facebook post, Minister Khanal clarified that Jha, who was arrested in Iran on charges of illegal smuggling and transportation of goods in Qeshm Island, remains in custody at a prison in Bandar Abbas pending trial. According to Khanal, Jha and six other foreign nationals were taken into custody by Iranian security forces in early January, prior to the outbreak of conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran on February 28.

ICC League 2: Rohit, Ishan power Nepal to six-wicket win over Scotland

Nepal national cricket team moved up to fifth place in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 standings after defeating Scotland national cricket team by six wickets on Monday. Chasing a target of 195 runs at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground, Nepal reached 199 runs for the loss of four wickets in 38.1 overs. Nepal captain Rohit Paudel remained unbeaten on 74 runs, leading the chase with a composed innings. He struck five boundaries and two sixes off 98 balls.
