KATHMANDU: Following the government’s decision to bring ordinances related to the Constitutional Council and cooperatives by bypassing the House of Representatives (HoR), the Nepali Congress (NC) has called a a meeting of opposition parliamentary party leaders today.
Chief opposition leader and Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Bhishma Raj Angdembe has called the meeting at the Congress parliamentary party office in Singha Durbar at 12 noon.
Parliamentary party leaders of the CPN-UML, Nepali Communist Party, Shram Sanskriti Party, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party have been invited to the meeting.
The agenda includes discussion on the government’s move to issue ordinances during the parliamentary recess, as well as formulating a joint strategy among opposition parties.
The ordinances were made public only after being sent to the President for certification on Tuesday. In response, Angdembe termed the move undemocratic, coercive, and an insult to the sovereign Parliament.
He warned that the opposition would not allow the essence of democracy, the people’s mandate, the sovereign Parliament, and the Constitution to be undermined or ignored under any circumstances.
He also questioned the government’s decision to issue ordinances despite holding a near two-thirds majority, asking why it mistrusts its own parliamentary strength.
Meanwhile, the CPN-UML, Nepali Communist Party, Shram Sanskriti Party, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party have strongly opposed the ordinances.
The government had decided to introduce the ordinances related to the Constitutional Council and cooperatives in Monday’s Cabinet meeting. However, Government Spokesperson and Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Sasmit Pokharel, did not disclose this during the post-Cabinet press briefing.
