BP Highway closed after heavy rain, vehicles halted

KAVREPALANCHOK: Traffic along the B.P. Highway has been suspended following rainfall-induced risks, with security authorities halting vehicular movement on Saturday afternoon.

According to the District Police Office, Dhulikhel, the road section from Namobuddha (Katunj area) to Mangaltar has been closed since 3:30 pm.

Police said the decision was taken after a surge in water level in the Roshi River raised the risk of flooding and possible damage along the highway. Information officer and Deputy Superintendent of Police Rabin Bista urged the public to travel only after assessing road conditions and avoid the route until further notice.

Authorities noted that previous flooding in the Roshi River had already swept away temporary diversions built along the highway. Last year’s floods and landslides damaged around 18 kilometers of the road in Roshi and Nepalthok areas, forcing the construction of temporary diversions to resume traffic.

Similarly, fresh damage occurred in the third week of Chaitra this year, when floods washed away around four kilometers of road in the same section, requiring reconstruction of temporary routes.

Following the latest disruption, vehicles have been held at key entry points including Kavrebhanjyang and Nepalthok.

The Division Road Office, Bhaktapur, said permanent road construction is currently underway in the affected areas, which have remained vulnerable since severe flood damage last year.
