KATHMANDU: Squatters living along the Bagmati riverbank in Thapathali have started vacating their homes after police made public announcements on Thursday evening, urging them to leave the area.
Authorities used loudspeakers to inform residents to clear the settlement, prompting many families to begin moving out of their makeshift houses.
The development follows the resignation of Home Minister Sudan Gurung on Wednesday. Shortly after, Prime Minister Balen Shah summoned security chiefs and instructed them to proceed with clearing squatter settlements.
Officials say the move is part of a broader plan to remove informal settlements from key areas in Kathmandu. However, concerns remain over the lack of clear rehabilitation measures for displaced families.
