CHITWAN: A total of 17 nests of gharial have been identified along the Rapti River in Chitwan, according to officials.
The search operation for crocodile nests was launched by Chitwan National Park on March 15 along the Rapti River stretch.
Information officer Abinash Thapa Magar said that two local boatmen were mobilized to assist in locating the nests. Based on their inputs, the identification process has now been completed.
He said the park will begin collecting gharial eggs from April 23 for artificial breeding at the Crocodile Breeding Centre in Kasara.
Authorities will determine which nests will be selected for egg collection aimed at hatching and conservation efforts.
In previous years, nest searches were conducted along both the Rapti and Narayani rivers. However, this year the operation was limited to the Rapti River only.
