24-hour early warning, flood forecasting services planned for monsoon preparedness

KATHMANDU: With the monsoon season approaching, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has unveiled a comprehensive emergency action plan aimed at minimizing potential loss of life and property from disasters.

The department said it will operate round-the-clock services to ensure the effectiveness of weather forecasting, flood forecasting, and early warning systems throughout the monsoon period.

Acting Director General Archana Shrestha said both the weather forecasting and flood forecasting divisions will remain active 24 hours a day. Routine weather forecasts covering up to three days will be issued daily between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm, while special bulletins with early warnings will be released three to five days in advance during critical situations.

She added that color-coded alert maps will be published to provide timely information on vulnerable weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and snowfall.

According to the department, real-time data collected from automated hydrological and meteorological stations across the country will be made available through its official website.

Flood forecasting will also be carried out up to three days in advance for major river systems, including the Koshi, Gandaki, Karnali, Bagmati, Babai, and West Seti, to help reduce flood-related risks during the monsoon.
