Govt forms commission to probe assets of top officials since 2005/06

KATHMANDU: The government has formed a commission to collect and investigate the asset details of key political office bearers and high-ranking officials who held public office between fiscal years 2005/06 and 2025/26.

A Cabinet meeting held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on Wednesday formed a four-member commission under the leadership of former Supreme Court justice Rajendra Kumar Bhandari.

The commission includes former justices Chandiraj Dhakal and Parajuli, former Deputy Inspector General of Police Ganesh KC, and chartered accountant Prakash Lamsal.

Following the formation of the government under Prime Minister Balen Shah, a decision had been taken on March 27 to constitute such a body within 15 days. The provision was included in point 43 of the government’s 100-point governance reform agenda.

The agenda outlines the need to address corruption, illicit enrichment, and impunity by forming a powerful asset investigation commission under the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers within the stipulated timeframe.

The commission has been mandated to conduct investigations in a legal, evidence-based, and impartial manner.

The government has also decided to ensure that the recommendations and reports submitted by the commission are implemented through the concerned authorities.
