Ex-PM Oli appears in court over Gen-Z movement crackdown, denies wrongdoing

KATHMANDU: KP Sharma Oli, chairman of the Nepal Communist Party (UML), appeared before the Kathmandu District Court on Sunday in connection with the crackdown during the Gen-Z Movement Nepal on September 8 and 9, 2025.

Oli, who was arrested March 28, told the court that there is no basis to link him directly to the incidents. He claimed that the Prime Minister does not have the authority to issue orders to fire weapons directly. He added that coordination with the army during emergency situations was inadequate, which complicated the situation.

Oli expressed shock upon learning about civilian casualties and said serious questions remain about the events. He said an investigation is needed into why curfews were violated during a movement that was claimed to be peaceful. He also emphasized that impartial action should be taken against anyone responsible for damages, including property destruction and incitement of crowds.

He further claimed that he faced accusations from vested interests despite acting in the national interest. Oli’s appearance follows his arrest based on recommendations from the Gauri Bahadur Karki Commission, after clashes during the movement led to human casualties.
