Nepali citizen Amrit Jha safe in Iran: MoFA

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has confirmed that Nepali citizen Amrit Jha, currently in the custody of the Iranian government, is safe. The ministry stated in a press briefing that the 33-year-old Jha is presently in prison in Iran.

The Ministry clarified that Jha was arrested prior to the recent tensions in the Middle East. A case is pending against him in an Iranian district court, and, according to Ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Chhetri, immediate action cannot be taken due to the ongoing legal proceedings.

Chhetri emphasized that Jha’s case is unrelated to the current conflict in the region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining contact with relevant authorities in Iran to ensure Jha’s welfare.

Originally from Mahottari, Jha resides in Ward No. 11 of Triyuga Municipality, Udayapur. He left Nepal two years ago to work in Dubai and serves as a ship captain on an oil tanker. Jha had studied in Bangkok, Thailand, and previously traveled to Iran for oil procurement with his ship.
