KATHMANDU: KP Sharma Oli, chair of the CPN-UML, is currently undergoing treatment at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj after multiple health complications were detected.
Oli, who was arrested from Gundu in Bhaktapur on Saturday in connection with a culpable homicide case, was admitted to the hospital on March 29 after doctors found irregularities in his heart rhythm along with several other health issues.
According to hospital officials, he is being kept under 24-hour observation at the Annex-1 building, bed number 501.
Hospital information officer Kaliprasad Rosyara said Oli has long been suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes.
Recent medical examinations conducted after his arrest also revealed four additional health issues. Doctors have detected a 22 mm gallstone in his gallbladder, which has raised concerns among the medical team.
In addition, Oli has kidney-related complications, having undergone two kidney transplants in the past, along with thyroid issues, gastric problems and acid reflux. Altogether, doctors say he is currently dealing with six major health conditions.
Doctors have indicated that surgery may be required to remove the gallstone. However, a final decision has not yet been made as several test reports, including urine and culture tests, are still pending.
Rosyara said Oli has already given consent for gallbladder surgery if deemed necessary. The procedure will only be carried out after doctors confirm that his health condition is stable enough for surgery.
Medical experts say conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes could complicate the surgical process. Doctors are working to stabilize these conditions with medication before making any decision regarding surgery.
Considering Oli’s sensitive health condition, the hospital has formed a multidisciplinary team of specialists. The team includes cardiologists, nephrologists, general surgeons, physicians and laboratory experts who are jointly monitoring and treating him.
Hospital sources said Oli’s condition is currently stable despite multiple health issues. However, doctors noted that risks remain due to his chronic illnesses and newly detected complications.
Meanwhile, legal proceedings against Oli are also underway.
Police launched an investigation against him under Section 181 of the Criminal Code 2017 for alleged negligent homicide based on a report prepared by a probe committee led by Gauri Bahadur Karki regarding the Gen-Z protest that took place on September 8 and 9.
Following instructions from Home Minister Sudan Gurung, police arrested Oli on Saturday. However, due to his health condition, he has been kept in the hospital while both treatment and investigation continue.
Doctors have recommended that he remain hospitalized for further observation until pending medical reports arrive and a decision on possible surgery is made.
