House of Representatives to elect Speaker on April 5

KATHMANDU: The House of Representatives is set to elect its new Speaker on April 5, following a consensus reached at an all-party meeting held on Wednesday at the Parliament Secretariat in Singha Durbar.

Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Kabindra Burlakoti said that a proposal for the Speaker’s election will be presented in the first House meeting on Thursday, with April 3 set aside for nomination submissions.

Until a new procedural guideline is enacted, the House will operate under the existing rules, Burlakoti added. The first meeting will also include a tribute to martyrs of the Gen-Z movement, along with remarks from the top leaders of participating parties.

Burlakoti noted that RSP has a relatively larger number of lawmakers in the House, prompting discussions on ensuring representation for other parties, which will also be discussed within the party.

Following the meeting, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) lawmaker Khushbu Oli said she raised the matter of giving nationally recognized parties representation in all committees, along with suggestions for amending the House procedural rules.

The first House meeting will convene on Thursday at 2:00 pm at the Parliament building in Singha Durbar. The Parliament Secretariat has coordinated with all nationally represented parties to prepare the meeting’s agenda.
