Home Minister Aryal recommended for National Assembly membership

KATHMANDU: The government has recommended Om Prakash Aryal for appointment as a member of the National Assembly of Nepal.

A Cabinet meeting held on Sunday decided to recommend Aryal to Ram Chandra Poudel for nomination to the upper house.

Aryal was appointed Home Minister on Bhadra 30 by interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki.

He previously served as a legal advisor when Balen Shah was mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. A legal professional, Aryal was also involved in the process of forming the current interim government.

Earlier, there had been discussions about appointing Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal to the National Assembly. However, Prime Minister Karki decided to recommend Aryal in recognition of his role in helping ensure the successful completion of the recent elections.

Aryal is considered one of the prime minister’s close and trusted allies within the Cabinet. At one point, supporters close to Balen Shah had reportedly pushed for his removal, but Prime Minister Karki defended him.

Aryal was appointed Home Minister on Bhadra 30, alongside the appointment of Kulman Ghising to the energy portfolio and Rameshwor Khanal to the finance ministry.
