Mustang sends 4,391 kg of waste for recycling in six months

MUSTANG: A total of 4,391 kilograms of solid waste has been transported from Mustang for recycling during the first six months of the current fiscal year.

The Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Jomsom has dispatched waste collected from Waragung Muktichhetra, Gharpajhong and Thasang rural municipalities to Pokhara for processing.

According to Rajesh Prasad Gupta, Chief of the ACAP Jomsom Office, the project has been transporting non-biodegradable waste collected by local communities to Pokhara by truck since the last fiscal year. The initiative aims to keep the religious and tourist district of Mustang clean, orderly and environmentally friendly.

Gupta said the collected non-biodegradable plastic waste is sent to Green Waste Management Pvt. Ltd. in Pokhara for recycling. So far in the current fiscal year, waste has been transported to Pokhara four times by mid-January.

In the first phase, 544 kg of waste was sent on August 27, 2025, followed by 860 kg on November 5, 153 kg on November 23, and 1,351 kg on December 24.

ACAP Jomsom bears the transportation costs from its own funds to deliver non-biodegradable waste generated by tourists and local communities to the processing center in Pokhara.

Last fiscal year, ACAP transported 10,190 kg of waste collected from the three local units to the Green Waste Management Processing Centre in Pokhara.

ACAP and Green Waste Management Pvt. Ltd. had earlier reached an agreement to manage non-biodegradable plastic waste collected in Mustang. However, Gupta noted that arranging transportation for waste collected in remote areas of Mustang remains a challenge.
