Sher Bahadur Deuba opts out of March 5 elections



KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) former President Sher Bahadur Deuba has decided not to contest the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) elections, ending his decades-long streak of electoral victories from Dadeldhura.

His personal secretary, Bhanu Deuba, confirmed the decision, stating, “He has announced that he will not contest the elections.”

Deuba served as Nepali Congress president in two consecutive terms, elected in 2072 BS and re-elected in 2078 BS. Following his reduced political activity after the Gen-Z movement, he handed over party responsibilities to Purna Bahadur Khadka as Acting President.

Subsequently, Gagan Thapa was elected President of the Nepali Congress at a special general convention held in Kathmandu amid disputes surrounding the party’s general convention. The party, now under Thapa’s leadership, is currently finalizing direct candidacies for the House of Representatives elections.
