KATHMANDU: Gen-Z Movement Nepal has strongly objected to what it called an attempt to grant immunity to Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane, who faces allegations of cooperative fraud, money laundering and organized crime.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the movement accused the Sushila Karki-led government — which it claims was formed through the hijacking of the rebellion and seizure of power — and the Attorney General appointed by it of weakening the supremacy of law by shielding alleged criminals.
The movement said such actions go against democratic values, victims’ right to justice and the responsibility of the state.
It recalled that it had already demanded the immediate dismissal of Attorney General Sabita Bhandari Baral following allegations that she misused her authority to illegally protect a gang involved in heinous crimes, including drugging teenage girls aged 16–17 and trafficking their eggs.
The Gen-Z Movement also reminded that 76 people were killed and more than 3,000 were maimed during the Gen-Z uprising for good governance and the rule of law, saying it is deeply objectionable to play with such historic sacrifices by protecting criminals.
Referring to the events of September 9, the movement said Lamichhane’s group had broken into a jail, freed prisoners and created nationwide chaos in a bid to seize power by spreading instability.
It also pointed out that millions of cooperative fraud victims are still waiting for justice, with some having taken their own lives and many suffering severe mental and physical trauma.
The movement said any form of immunity granted to a person accused of organized crime would amount to a betrayal of the Gen-Z uprising and a grave insult to the sacrifices made. “The law must be equal for all. Privileges for the powerful and silence for the victims are unacceptable,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the movement has called for a public boycott and civil disobedience against Prime Minister Sushila Karki and the Attorney General she appointed.
It has also demanded an immediate end to the culture of protecting criminals, the removal of the Attorney General, and the guarantee of impartial justice for cooperative fraud victims.
