Party unity at stake: Koirala acts as mediator between Deuba and special convention faction

KATHMANDU: Following a meeting with Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba at his Maharajgunj residence, leader Dr Shekhar Koirala has begun discussions with the special convention supporters, including General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma.

While Deuba was holding meetings with close leaders, Koirala arrived at Maharajgunj carrying messages from Thapa and Sharma. He was accompanied by Deputy General Secretaries Jeevan Pariyar and Badri Pandey, as well as leader Minendra Rijal.

Speaking about his efforts, Koirala stated, “Even if I have to drink poison, I will prevent Congress from splitting; I am making a final attempt with both sides.” He delivered the messages from the special convention supporters to Deuba but has not revealed the details of the minimum consensus proposal.

According to sources, Deuba informed Koirala that he is consulting with legal experts, as well as leaders like Ramesh Lekhak and other party functionaries.

After meeting Deuba, Koirala is now in dialogue with Thapa and Sharma, acting as a mediator to seek consensus between the two sides. Earlier on Monday afternoon, he also met with central members, district chiefs, and senior advocates from his faction to strategize.

Koirala emphasized his commitment to keeping the party united, telling leaders, “I have conveyed to the party president, acting president, and general secretaries that under no circumstances should the party split. Rest assured, the party will not split, and you should also focus on unity. There is no need for despair.”

Amid preparations for the special convention, some voices are calling for dissolving the 14th Congress leadership if the two-thirds support materializes, while Deuba has reportedly threatened legal action if 14th Congress Working committee is dissolved.
