Kirati-Sampang meeting: Both set sights on Sunsari-1

DHARAN: A political meeting between former minister Sudan Kirati and Dharan Mayor Harka Sampang on Sunday has set the stage for a high-stakes contest in Sunsari-1.

The two leaders discussed the country’s political and economic challenges and explored possibilities for cooperation, even as both are preparing to contest the upcoming House of Representatives elections from the same constituency.

Kirati said that the meeting focused on serious discussions about the country’s political and economic crisis and potential solutions. Both leaders described the meeting as positive and agreed to continue dialogue in the coming days.

During the discussions, an understanding was reached regarding cooperation between Sampang-led Shram Sanskriti Party and the Pragatisheel Loktantrik Party. While no formal alliance has been finalized, both sides have kept the door open for future political collaboration.

The Pragatisheel Loktantrik Party has recommended Sudan Kirati as its candidate from Sunsari-1 for the upcoming House of Representatives elections. At the same time, Dharan Mayor Harka Sampang is also preparing to contest from the same constituency. The party’s Sunsari District Working Committee has forwarded Kirati’s recommendation to the central committee for the March 5 elections.

In the prevous House of Representatives elections held in 2022, Kirati was elected from Bhojpur representing the then Maoist Center. After splitting with Janardan Sharma following the merger of the Maoist Center with other leftist parties to form the NCP, Kirati joined the newly formed Pragatisheel Loktantrik Party.

Sunsari-1, which includes Dharan Sub-metropolitan City, is the constituency from which both leaders are preparing to contest, setting the stage for a high-profile electoral battle.
