KATHMANDU: The second full meeting of the Central Committee of the Nepal Communist Party (UML) has begun with strong participation from members across the country, just 22 days after the completion of the party’s first central committee meeting.
Despite the cold weather and geographical difficulties, a large number of central committee members have gathered, reflecting high organizational engagement within the party.
Addressing the meeting, party Chair KP Sharma Oli presented a comprehensive review of the 11th National Convention, its key political message, the unusual political developments after September 8 and 9, the legal struggle over the restoration of the House of Representatives, the proposed general election, the global political situation and the party’s immediate tasks.
Oli said the 11th National Convention, held from December 14 to 16, 2025, was not merely an internal party process but a historic event that positively influenced the overall direction of national politics.
He said the country had fallen into a serious crisis following the violent and destructive incidents of September 8 and 9, and claimed that the UML stood firmly in defense of democracy, the Constitution and national interests, and reorganized itself during that difficult period.
According to Oli, the convention sent a clear message that the UML’s organizational strength, mass base, cadre morale and resistance capacity remain strong even under adverse conditions. He said the large public participation witnessed during the opening session at Sallaghari in Bhaktapur showed that democracy is unbeatable and the UML remains a leading force in its defense.
Oli also sharply criticized what he called planned attacks on democratic parties, the elected government and the House of Representatives, as well as attempts to glorify violence in the name of movements and misuse the youth after September.
He said such activities are part of a conspiracy to weaken democracy and push the country towards failure.
The party chairman said the convention resolved questions regarding the legitimacy and relevance of leadership through lawful and democratic competition, strengthening internal democracy and party unity.
He highlighted the planned inclusion of a new generation in the Central Committee, maintaining a balance between experience and energy, and the ‘Ghar Farkaun’ (return home) campaign to bring together communist forces from different backgrounds as major achievements of the convention.
The second full meeting of the Central Committee is expected to endorse decisions of the Central Secretariat, discuss the current political strategy and set the party’s future course of action.
