Nepali Congress establishment faction urges restraint to protect party unity

KATHMANDU: The establishment faction of the Nepali Congress has decided to appeal to party ranks across the country to exercise restraint in order to protect party unity amid the escalating dispute over the special general convention.

A meeting of the establishment faction held in Kathmandu on Friday concluded that attempts are being made to create confusion within the party in the name of a special convention. The meeting therefore resolved to call on leaders and cadres nationwide to act with restraint and safeguard the unity of the party.

Central Committee member Guru Baral said the party has entered a highly sensitive phase in its history, with forces trying to weaken and divide it becoming increasingly active. He warned that a weak and divided Congress would be unable to uphold democracy and national integrity, adding that even Nepal’s national identity appears to be facing growing challenges.

“The Congress is at a critical crossroads. There are elements both inside and outside the party who want to see it divided and weakened. At a time when dark clouds are also gathering over national identity, it is vital to protect party unity with vigilance and responsibility,” Baral said.

He stressed that the gathering was not aimed at confrontation but at strengthening unity. Simply changing the party president or central leadership, he said, would not solve all problems. Instead, the party needs to reconnect with its grassroots and bring leaders and cadres together in line with the changed political context.

Baral also said efforts are underway to find a middle ground between the two contending views within the party. “The process of seeking a point of convergence is still ongoing. We are committed to building a strong and united Nepali Congress,” he added.
