Birgunj curfew extended until 1 pm amid rising tensions between two communities

BIRGUNJ: The curfew imposed in Birgunj has been extended until 1 pm today following escalating tensions between two communities over religious and social issues.

According to the District Administration Office, Parsa, the curfew, which was initially enforced from 6 pm on Monday until 8 am this morning, has now been extended until 1 pm to prevent further unrest and maintain public order.

Chief District Officer Bhola Dahal said the curfew has been imposed across key areas of Birgunj Metropolitan City. Under the order, all forms of gatherings, assemblies, rallies and demonstrations are prohibited within the area stretching from Bus Park, Nagwa and Inarwa in the east, the Sirsiya River in the west, Gandak Chowk in the north, and Shankaracharya Gate in the south.

The administration has urged residents not to step out of their homes during the curfew period except for essential purposes. Those who must go out have been asked to coordinate with nearby security personnel or seek permission by calling the emergency number 100.

The District Administration Office has stated that security personnel will facilitate the movement of vehicles providing essential services during the curfew. These include ambulances, fire engines, hearses, vehicles used by health workers, journalists, tourist vehicles, vehicles belonging to human rights organizations and diplomatic missions, as well as air travelers carrying valid flight tickets.

Birgunj has witnessed continuous protests since Sunday after tensions flared between two communities over religious and social issues. The demonstrations have contributed to a deteriorating security situation, prompting the local administration to impose and extend the curfew to restore calm.
