Nepali Congress prepares for special convention on Jan 11-12

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma are moving forward with preparations to hold a special convention of the party on January 11 and 12. The decision follows calls from the majority of convention delegates.

Party leader Ajay Babu Siwakoti said General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma visited the residence of party President Sher Bahadur Deuba at 4 pm on Thursday, carrying a proposal for the special convention.

“On behalf of the central committee, the two general secretaries have called for the special convention on January 11 and 12. Sharma went to inform the party president about this,” Siwakoti said.

He added that holding neither a regular nor a special convention would violate the party statute, and the special convention is being convened in accordance with the party’s regulations. Siwakoti also noted that any attempt to block the convention would be unreasonable.

Regarding participation, Siwakoti said all Nepali Congress delegates are allowed to attend the special convention.

“Whether delegates have signed in support or not, everyone can participate. Those who signed will come, and even those who did not sign can attend. They may express dissenting opinions, but all are allowed to participate,” he said.
