30% of inmates who fled Nakhu Prison during Gen-Z movement still at large

KATHMANDU: Thirty percent of inmates who escaped from Nakhu Prison in Lalitpur during the Gen-Z movement are still out of contact, prison authorities have said.

Following the incident at Nakhu Prison on September 9, 2025, a total of 1,280 inmates serving sentences in various criminal cases had fled the facility. According to the Prison Administration, around 70 percent of the escaped inmates have since returned to prison, either voluntarily or with the assistance of security agencies.

Nakhu Prison Chief Dirgharaj Upadhyay said efforts to locate and apprehend the remaining inmates are ongoing.

“The search for the absconding inmates is not limited to within Nepal but has extended beyond the country as well,” Upadhyay said. “We are actively working to return all fugitives to prison in accordance with the law.”

The Prison Management Department had earlier announced that inmates who failed to return to prison by October 6 would face action under the Prison Act, and other prevailing laws.

Prison authorities have urged the families of the absconding inmates, security agencies, local governments, media outlets, relevant government offices, and all concerned stakeholders to assist in the search and recovery efforts.
