Kathmandu residents protest against river and stream regulations

KATHMANDU: Residents living along roads and riverbanks in the Kathmandu Valley staged a protest today, demanding the repeal of existing river and stream regulations.

The demonstration took place at Maitighar Mandala, where participants raised slogans and voiced their grievances.

Protesters chanted slogans such as, “Give justice, not decisions; repeal non-judicial stream regulations,” “Repeal non-judicial road and river regulations that displace people,” “Rivers cannot be encroached upon, people cannot be displaced in the name of regulations,” and “Repeal river and stream regulations.”

The demonstrators were opposing the Supreme Court’s directive allowing only 20 meters of preservation on either side of rivers. They urged the government to annul the regulations, which they claim are non-judicial and harmful to local residents.
