KATHMANDU: ICC T20 World Cup trophy tour will visit Nepal for three days ahead of the tournament scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.
The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) said the trophy tour will take place from January 5 to 7, with the trophy arriving in Nepal on January 5.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has included Nepal in its pre-World Cup trophy tour as part of its outreach to Asian cricketing nations. According to the ICC, the trophy will be taken to several Asian countries, including host nations India and Sri Lanka, as well as Nepal, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, and Mongolia.
Nepal is set to play the ICC T20 World Cup for the third time. In the upcoming tournament, Nepal has been placed in Group C, which is considered one of the toughest groups. Alongside Nepal, the group features two-time champions West Indies, former champions England, Bangladesh, and Italy.
Nepal will face England and Italy for the first time in T20 World Cup history. All of Nepal’s group-stage matches will be played in Mumbai. Italy is making its maiden World Cup appearance, having qualified from the European qualifiers by finishing ahead of Scotland, along with the Netherlands.
Nepal previously participated in the T20 World Cup in 2014 and 2024, making the upcoming edition its third appearance.
The 20 participating teams have been divided into four groups. Group ‘A’ includes India, Pakistan, the United States, the Netherlands, and Namibia. Group ‘B’ features Australia, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Ireland, and Oman, while Group ‘D’ consists of South Africa, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Canada, and the UAE.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eight, which will be divided into two groups. The top two teams from the Super Eight stage will qualify for the semi-finals.
