KATHMANDU: The Nepali Communist Party (NCP), led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, has prioritized new faces, youth leaders, and representatives of Generation Z in its proportional representation list for the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.
A review of the list shows that, apart from a few senior figures, most candidates are either first-time nominees or individuals who have worked within the party for a long period without previously holding prominent positions.
The party has deliberately moved away from fielding only well-known figures and instead focused on promoting younger leaders and those representing emerging social movements.
The proportional list, jointly prepared by NCP coordinator Prachanda and senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, reflects an effort to provide opportunities to leaders from both factions who had remained politically sidelined for years. The list also indicates an attempt to broaden the party’s social base by including candidates from diverse and historically marginalized communities across different regions.
In terms of social inclusion, the NCP has nominated 18 candidates from the Madhes community, 15 from the Dalit community, seven from the Tharu community, five from the Muslim community, 33 from Indigenous Nationalities, and 32 from the Khas Arya group. Party leaders say this composition reflects a conscious effort to ensure broader representation while aligning the party with the aspirations of younger generations and underrepresented groups.
By emphasizing inclusivity and generational change, the NCP appears to be signaling a strategic shift ahead of the upcoming election, positioning itself as a party that seeks renewal through diversity, youth participation, and grassroots representation rather than reliance on long-established political figures.
