Ujyalo Nepal Party central member Bidhya Shrestha resigns, cites moral responsibility over Hetauda demolition drive

KATHMANDU: Bidhya Shrestha, a central committee member of Energy Minister Kulman Ghising-led Ujyalo Nepal Party, has announced her resignation, expressing moral objection to recent incidents in Hetauda.

Shrestha made the announcement through social media, stating that she is stepping down from her central committee position effective today. “I hereby resign from the central committee of Ujyalo Nepal Party from today. What will other fellow activists do? My morality did not allow me to continue,” she wrote.

She said the events in Hetauda, where authorities began demolishing structures built within the road boundary as part of a major road expansion drive, had deeply affected her. Stating that standing with the affected people was her moral duty, she said this sense of responsibility pushed her to resign.

The Hetauda road expansion work began this morning with the Road Division Office using JCB excavators to clear structures on both sides of the main market area. The office had earlier issued a public notice asking owners to remove structures within the 25–25 yard boundary along the East-West Highway and Tribhuvan Highway sections.

Shrestha urged other activists and colleagues to reflect seriously on the present circumstances and decide their stance accordingly.

“Moral responsibility matters. That is why I resigned. Please understand. The dead cannot speak, but I am alive,” she said.
