Government to mark September 8 as Gen-Z Martyrs’ Day

The government has decided to observe September 8 every year as Gen-Z Martyrs’ Day. Government spokesperson and Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Jagadish Kharel, informed that Monday’s Cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar passed the decision to commemorate those who lost their lives during the Gen-Z movement.

Faf du Plessis arrives in Kathmandu to play NPL

South African cricketer Faf du Plessis has arrived in Nepal. He landed in Kathmandu on Monday to play for Biratnagar Kings in Season 2 of the Nepal Premier League (NPL).

Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah’s father passes away while undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital

Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah is mourning the loss of his father, Ramnarayan Shah, who passed away on Monday at Civil Hospital, New Baneshwor. Ramnarayan Shah was admitted to the hospital on Sunday for treatment. Hospital sources said he had developed a urinary infection that spread throughout his body. Despite being placed on a ventilator, he succumbed during treatment.

SC orders Chief Minister Yadav to seek vote of confidence within 24 hours

The Supreme Court has issued a mandamus order directing Madhesh Province Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav to obtain a vote of confidence within 24 hours. A bench of Justices Hari Prasad Phuyal and Nityananda Pandey issued the order to the Province Head after three days of hearings.

Nepali Congress to hold 15th General Convention from January 10 to 12

The Nepali Congress has scheduled its 15th General Convention from January 10 to 12, 2026. Following nearly one and a half months of deliberations, the Central Working Committee (CWC) decided on the dates during its meeting on Monday, party spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat said. The CWC had been deadlocked for over 40 days due to disagreements between the main convention and special convention factions. After extended discussions, the party’s establishment faction proposed holding the convention within January, and the schedule was unanimously approved in Monday’s meeting, Mahat added.

Health Minister Sudha Sharma holds courtesy meeting with Sri Lankan Ambassador on recent disaster

Health and Population Minister Dr. Sudha Sharma held a courtesy meeting with Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Nepal, Ruwanthi Delpitiya, on Monday. During the meeting, the ambassador briefed Minister Gautam on the recent devastating floods in Sri Lanka caused by Cyclone “Ditwah.” She also expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by the Nepalese government so far and requested further support for relief efforts.

General Secretary Sharma: Pushing back regular General Convention could lead to a Special Convention

Nepali Congress General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma has said that if the party fails to hold its regular general convention in Poush (mid-December to mid-January) as decided, it may result in the need for a special convention. Speaking to journalists after the Central Committee meeting held at the party’s central office in Sanepa on Monday, Sharma stated that since the date for the regular general convention has already been set, any attempt to postpone it would trigger a situation requiring a special convention.

NEPSE slips 4.28 points, market turnover drops to Rs 4.71 billion

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index fell by 4.28 points on Monday, closing at 2,645.24 points. The market had also declined by 26 points on the Sunday, continuing a mild downward trend. Trading turnover decreased by 33 percent to Rs 4.71 billion from Rs 7.08 billion recorded on the previous day.

Security Printing Center hands over 3,082 driver’s licenses to Transport Department

Security Printing Center, tasked with printing driver’s licenses, has handed over a total of 3,082 licenses to the Department of Transport Management (DoTM). On Monday, the center transferred 1,150 licenses as part of the third printing phase. So far, the department had sent the details of 4,200 applicants to the center for printing.

Prithvi Subba Gurung declares KP Sharma Oli irreplaceable in UML

UML leader Prithvi Subba Gurung has asserted that CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has no alternative in the party. Gurung made the remarks during an interaction organized by Press Chautari Nepal in Kathmandu on Monday. Gurung, who has previously served as Minister for Communication and Information Technology, claimed that both domestic and foreign actors conspired against Oli due to his strong political influence.

Nepal must ask why growth keeps failing: Finance Minister Khanal

Finance Minister Rameshwor Prasad Khanal has said Nepal must undertake a serious self-assessment to understand why the country has repeatedly failed to achieve its expected economic growth rates. Speaking at the 29th anniversary and awards ceremony of the Society of Economic Journalists–Nepal (SEJON), Minister Khanal said years of political dissatisfaction and instability have hindered development and economic activity. “Regardless of how political dissatisfaction manifests, everyone must understand that wealth created by anyone in this country ultimately belongs to Nepal,” he said.

Govt will not withdraw Film Bill, says Minister Kharel

Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel has made it clear that the government is not in favor of withdrawing the Film Bill 2024. Speaking at a meeting of the Legislation Management Committee under the National Assembly in Singha Durbar on Monday, Minister Kharel said the Film Bill will not be taken back despite requests from some organizations within the film sector.

Stolen Kumari Ghar artifact returned to Nepal from the UK

A culturally significant artifact stolen from the Kumari Ghar, the residence of the Living Goddess in Kathmandu, has been brought back to Nepal from the United Kingdom. The Department of Archaeology, working in coordination with heritage activists in Nepal and abroad, successfully retrieved the Toran—a decorative piece dating back to the Malla era—which had been stolen in 2057 BS. The artifact has now been restored to its original place in the Kumari Ghar.

Nepal Rastra Bank cuts policy rate, raises personal overdraft limit

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has released the first quarterly review of the monetary policy for the current fiscal year. In the review, the central bank has reduced the policy rate from 4.50% to 4.25%. Similarly, the upper limit of the corridor, the Standing Liquidity Facility (SLF) rate, has been lowered from 6% to 5.75%, while the lower limit, the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) rate, remains unchanged at 2.75%. The cut in the policy rate is expected to put pressure on commercial banks to reduce lending rates further.

Gold price rises by Rs 1,400 per tola; silver up by Rs 45

Gold prices increased in the domestic market on Monday, with the price of fine gold rising by Rs 1,400 per tola. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, gold is being traded at Rs 253,600 per tola today. On Sunday, the precious metal was traded at Rs 252,200 per tola.

Imports surge to Rs 16 billion, exports hit Rs 8 billion through Kakarbhitta in four months

Goods worth more than Rs 16 billion were imported through the eastern border point of Kakarbhitta in the first four months of the current fiscal year, while exports stood at around Rs 8 billion, according to the Mechi Customs Office. From Shrawan to the end of Kartik of FY 2082/83, imports reached Rs 16.02 billion, Information Officer Ishwar Kumar Humagain said. Compared to the same period last fiscal year, imports have increased by 12.12 percent, while exports have declined by 4.12 percent.
