Govt will not withdraw Film Bill, says Minister Kharel

KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel has made it clear that the government is not in favor of withdrawing the Film Bill 2024.

Speaking at a meeting of the Legislation Management Committee under the National Assembly in Singha Durbar on Monday, Minister Kharel said the Film Bill will not be taken back despite requests from some organizations within the film sector.

He informed the committee that several associations from the film industry had urged him to withdraw the bill. However, he stated that the government is ready to sit with stakeholders and discuss their concerns in detail.

Minister Kharel said the aim this time is to pass a result-oriented and effective film law. He also stressed that granting full autonomy to the Film Development Board should not lead to misuse. According to him, the bill is intended to facilitate, regulate, and modernize film certification rather than impose unnecessary control.

He further emphasized that the film sector should remain under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Communications. Committee Chairperson Tulasa Kumari Dahal said discussions will be held with stakeholders before moving the bill forward.
