NC races to finalize General Convention timeline

KATHMANDU: The Central Working Committee (CWC) of the Nepali Congress (NC) is meeting at 2 pm today at the party’s Sanepa central office, with the primary agenda focused on deciding the date for the party’s 15th General Convention.

Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka had been holding rounds of discussions to bridge differences between leaders pushing for a regular general convention and those demanding a special general convention, but the talks failed to reach a conclusion.

Following this, Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba consulted office-bearers and former office-bearers. Deuba has consistently favored holding the General Convention before the next general election.

The Nepali Congress has held a series of meetings without arriving at a decision. With growing acceptance of a mid-term proposal, suggesting that a regular general convention could proceed if the demand for a special convention is withdrawn, today’s meeting is expected to attempt forging consensus, especially as Deuba has now signaled readiness for a pre-election convention.

President Deuba has instructed Acting President Khadka and Central Committee member Ramesh Lekhak to present a proposal in today’s meeting to hold the general convention by mid-January, 2026.

Meanwhile, NC General Secretary Gagan Thapa, who has been advocating for a special general convention, has also said he is open to holding the regular general convention by mid-January if the party leadership, including the President and Acting President, acts in good faith.

According to a senior leader, the party is exploring the possibility of scheduling the general convention from January 11, 2026, and a proposal to that effect may be tabled in today’s meeting.
