KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki, who is also overseeing the responsibilities of the Defence Ministry, inspected the Nepali Army headquarters to review security preparations for the upcoming House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.
During the visit, the Nepali Army briefed her on the current security situation, major challenges, sensitive areas, coordination mechanisms, and the overall strategy for election deployment. The presentation also covered plans to ensure voter safety and maintain order throughout the polling process.
Prime Minister Karki said that restoring peace and security has been the government’s first responsibility since it was formed following the Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9. She said the government is committed to holding a free, fair and fear-free election on the scheduled date.
Expressing confidence that the Army would successfully fulfill the responsibility entrusted to it, she issued several directives aimed at strengthening coordination and preventing any security lapses. She stressed that the upcoming elections must not witness even a single drop of bloodshed or a single injury, reminding security agencies to work in a coordinated and error-free manner, particularly in sensitive areas.
Karki directed security agencies to provide citizens with a clear sense of safety, assist police operations, and ensure that all political parties can conduct their activities without obstruction. She also instructed the Army to fully support the police in recovering weapons looted or lost during the Gen-Z movement, arresting absconding suspects, and helping restore normalcy.
Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Law Minister Anil Kumar Sinha, Chief Secretary Suman Raj Aryal, Chief of Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel, and other senior officials were present during the inspection.
