Nepal rescues 37 citizens from Myanmar, returns them from Thailand

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Embassy has successfully rescued 37 Nepali nationals who fled Myanmar and reached Thailand, returning them to Nepal on Thursday via Nepal Airlines flight RA402.

According to the embassy, the rescued individuals had gone to Myanmar under the pretext of attractive job opportunities. Instead, they were forced to work in illegal online scam operations, including dating scams, casinos, gaming, phishing, and crypto fraud.

The incident came to light after Myanmar security forces raided a scam center in Myawaddy on October 19. Following the raid, the Nepalis escaped to Thailand before the embassy facilitated their return.

The embassy stated that efforts are ongoing to bring back an additional 23 Nepalis in Myawaddy, two in Mae Sot, Thailand, and four in Cambodia.

Officials also urged Nepalis to follow government procedures before seeking foreign employment and warned against traveling to countries like Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand under the guise of tourism for unauthorized work.
