Balachaturdashi being observed, commemorating departed souls

KATHMANDU: The Balachaturdashi festival is being observed across the country today in remembrance of departed souls.

Devotees have gathered at Shiva temples, including the Pashupatinath Temple, since last night to mark the festival. Throughout the night, they light lamps in memory of their departed family members and keep a vigil.

In the early hours of the morning, devotees sow Satbeej (seven kinds of grains) around the temple premises. The festival formally begins on the night of the 13th day of the waning moon in the month of Mangsir and concludes today with the offering of Satbeej at various Shiva shrines.

A large number of devotees have thronged the Pashupatinath Temple to observe Bala Chaturdashi, according to sources. Those unable to visit major temples observed the festival at nearby Shiva temples within their localities.
