Contempt case filed against PM Karki over non-compliance with SC order

KATHMANDU: A contempt of court case has been filed against Prime Minister Sushila Karki for allegedly failing to comply with the Supreme Court’s order regarding the recall of ambassadors.

The case, filed by advocate Prem Silwal, highlights that the government did not follow the SC directive to hold off on recalling ambassadors immediately. The hearing has been scheduled for November 23, according to Supreme Court spokesperson Arjun Prasad Koirala.

The current government, on October 16, had decided to recall 11 ambassadors appointed during the previous administration. Previously, a joint bench of Justices Saranga Subedi and Shrikant Paudel had issued an interim order on November 2 to maintain the status quo and delay the recall.

Despite the Supreme Court’s order, the government reportedly issued directives the very next day to recall the ambassadors and report to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, prompting the contempt case. Advocate Silwal stated that the case was filed to uphold the dignity of the court and the rule of law.
