Oli must take responsibility for crackdown during Gen-Z movement: Bhim Rawal

KATHMANDU: Dr Bhim Rawal has said former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and then Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak must take responsibility for the crackdown that occurred during the Gen-Z movement.

Speaking at an interaction organised by the Reporters Club Nepal in Kathmandu on Saturday, Rawal said those holding positions of state responsibility must also be accountable for incidents that take place under their watch.

In a parliamentary system, he said, the prime minister and the concerned minister must take responsibility when such events occur.

He stressed the need for an in-depth study and investigation into who orchestrated the destruction on September 9, adding that external forces may also have played a role in the violence and losses seen during the Gen-Z protests.

Rawal reminded that the current government is a six-month election-focused administration and should not enter into agreements with neighbouring countries that could have long-term implications.

He said the government must ensure that the upcoming general elections are conducted in a free, fair, and fear-free environment.

Rawal also expressed concern about rising lawlessness, noting that armed groups and escaped prisoners are still at large, and emphasised that unity among communist forces is necessary to confront the challenges facing the country.
