PM Karki urges officials to enhance performance amid growing public expectations

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) Sushila Karki has directed government officials to enhance their performance, stating that the current pace of work is insufficient to meet public expectations.

Speaking at a review meeting on the implementation of policies, programs, and the budget for the current fiscal year at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on Friday, PM Karki emphasized the need to improve operational methods in line with the country’s recent political changes and the aspirations of the Gen-Z generation.

“The main reasons behind public frustration are widespread corruption and delays in the country’s development progress,” the Prime Minister’s Secretariat quoted her as saying.

PM Karki stressed that ministers, secretaries, and senior officials have a crucial role to play in controlling corruption within state mechanisms. She called on them to work responsibly and promote fairness within their agencies.

“I urge all of you to take responsibility for ensuring integrity and transparency in your work,” she added.

The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to the ministers and officials for their efforts in overcoming challenges posed by the Gen-Z protests, monsoon-induced disasters, and long breaks during the festive season.

PM Karki highlighted that the review of ministries’ performance is not merely an administrative exercise but a critical process for promoting accountability. “It is an opportunity to build public trust and demonstrate the government’s commitment to its goals,” she noted.

The Prime Minister shared that public resources are being mobilized for the welfare of the people but stressed that regular administrative processes alone are insufficient to meet rising public expectations.

PM Karki further directed ministers, secretaries, and responsible officials to work toward addressing the public’s demands and to effectively mobilize line agencies.

She also mentioned that the annual action plans of all ministries and their line agencies are being revised in line with the Cabinet’s decisions on September 21, focusing on austerity measures, prioritizing projects for the reconstruction and maintenance of public infrastructure damaged during the Gen-Z protests, managing election-related expenditures, and driving economic recovery and relief efforts.
