General convention must address changed political reality: UML Senior Vice Chair Pokharel

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Senior Vice Chair Ishwor Pokharel has said that, given the rapidly changing political circumstances, the party’s upcoming 11th General Convention should review the revised statute as well as the current political situation.

In a statement issued today, Pokharel stressed that the general convention must discuss the developments following the Gen-Z movement on September 8 and 9.

The UML leadership has been reiterating that the upcoming general convention is intended solely for selecting new leadership, as the second statutory general convention was already held.

Chairman KP Sharma Oli had publicly stated that the general convention would focus on leadership selection after he addressed contemporary political issues.

“The situation has changed drastically since the Gen-Z movement. The political environment, political parties, the government, and institutions such as parliament are no longer what they were just yesterday. In such circumstances, some of our earlier conclusions may no longer guide the present and future correctly. We need to update ourselves,” the statement read.

“The role of the general convention representatives will be to participate in the debate and reach new conclusions in accordance with the ideas and beliefs outlined in our party’s guiding principle—people’s multi-party democracy.”
